Gentlemen,
FINALLY - I have an Elo serial touchscreen working in 10.04.
I followed the instructions from Elo for two monitors. The only thing I
changed from the first attempt was during calibration Elo has two commands.
  The first command
./elova -nvram
seemed to lock the touchscreen and I was unable to recover from this.
  The second commad
./elova
calibrated the touchscreen and it is working now.
I will again attempt the first screen.

regarding Elo USB touchscreens
During this process I learned a Elo USB touchscreen works by just being
plugged in. I plugged the USB touchscreen in and started a 10.04 install. I
wanted the install to recognize the touchscreen and configure it. On the
first screen of the install I touched the screen. It worked!! I used the USB
touchscreen to complete the install. WOW - sweet
Stuart
