Wouldn't the DC motor be far more versatile? Especially for low speed rigid
tapping.

I actually want to change my spindle motors to DC. Mostly because they're
lying around, free. Better low end torque, and easy to control speed. With
an encoder, the spindle becomes a servo axis.
