First, I have nfs setup for that file access. No winderz machine on the
premises.

Second is internet shorthand, As Near As I Can Tell, ANAICT.

Unplug the net cable? ;) I am sure there is, someplace in the menu's, a
place to disable it. It will need root perms to do it. Many of those
updates are security related, and if you have winders machines on your
network too, they are virus and rootkit magnets, so it seems like a no-
brainer to keep up to date on that stuff, particularly if the updater says
they are security related.

I wouldn't worry about updating emc/linuxcnc itself, I just do it. I have
never, in several years, had emc/linuxcnc in an unusable state due to an
update that lasted more than a few hours. Each one has always added
something, without breaking old code, that you will eventually find a use
for. All my stuff can browse the net, or go on IRC. Its all behind a
router running dd-wrt. The only inbound access allowed is to my web page,
on this machine or by ssh using a password the checkers say will take the
universe running down 3 times to find.

As for singling this one out? I guess a preach from the linuxcnc branded
pulpit. Old farts tend to do that, and at 77 I believe I qualify for that
moniker easily enough.

I saw a T-shirt about 16 or 17 years ago that I'll own if I ever see it for
sale, says "Yes, I'm a Senior Citizen, now give me the @$# discount!" ;-)

Cheers Tony, Gene
