I have to say that as a newbie 2 years ago I did a trial of both Mach and LinuxCNC. Even with practically no knowledge of Linux I found LinuxCNC to be no more difficult to set up using the LiveCD than Mach was. Of course my machine setup is a pretty basic 3 axis configuration. The big plus for me was that I was able to run Linux on a 10 year old P4 that choked on Mach. I don't regret my choice at all.
