A work around for this (or at least a similar problem occuring with Ubuntu
10.04 and tk8.5) was incorporated in axis (v2.5 or later):

You can also try the shell commands directly as:

$   xhost -SI:localuser:gdm -SI:localuser:root

on the machine displaying axis (the XServer)
