I'd expect that your LiveCD did not restrict the kernel updates.  LinuxCNC 
ONLY runs with the kernel it installs, which must never be updated, at 
least until a new RTAI enabled kernel has been built.

Do a "uname -r" in a terminal window, and show us what answer you get.
