I second this, even absent the issues with the real time kernel.  I updated
my desktop to 12.04.  It took me a couple of days before I stopped cursing
the new user interface.  I don't hate it enough to figure out how to change
it, but it has some annoying quirks.  I suspect that linuxCNC could be made
to work, I have a cad program that isn't particularly well written that
works fine.  The issue is kernel compatibility.    Upgrading actually
improved my productivity on that system because I was suffering frequent
random crashes on 10.04.  Still don't know what was wrong, probably video
drivers.  Don't care any more.
