Mazak conversational has the ability to look at the tool
description and find that tool but I have never actually used their control.

thats unfortunate as i spent several hours a month or so ago looking
for a mazak tool table to post as i believe it is the most intuitive
mistake free system i have ever worked with (I for one would like to
copy it):) . I think we need to evaluate how to extrapolate offsets
either full diameter or half, i prefer full as it reduces the math
load of the operator. likewise defining the tool is really only
necessary for conversational programming as cam or conventional
programming will detail this in the program itself. as to the
assigning of pockets we have three choices, assignment, (each tool has
a pocket ) randomization ( control picks the first available pocket,
this is faster) , and random with the ability to assign which i vote
for so as to have the fastest tool change possible and assign for
large tools that need an empty pocket next to them. this is all
hitting at a good time as im trying to by a kiwa mill from work with a
15 position atc :)

also are the standards iso ? or eia? i think this bears some
consideration having worked with fadals, fanucs, mitsubishi, matsuura,
mazaks, haas although all similar to some extent i cant say that
there is a standard, as ive seen fanucs that use half offsets and use
full dia offsets, which all of this is also dependant upon programming
technique if one really digs down to it .

" I
do know that you can call a similar tool from a different pocket in case of
tool breakage and or wear." wrote jeff johnson

yes this is possible and it is used on pallet changers and other high
volume lights out operations, a tool measurement probe probes the tool
for length and if it is out from the original tool setting it will
change to a similar tool , how this is macroed i do not know.
also it can be programmed to change after elapsed cutting time again i
do not know how to do this, but the mazak nexxus 740 will do it ( i
surely wish i still worked at the company that had those :( )
