When I started converting my lathe over to linuxcnc I bought a switchmode
supply (originally intended for telecoms use). It was a bit cheaper than the
standard industrial switchers, and about the same price as building a linear
from off-the-shelf components.

Trouble was, I had a lot of noise issues, which I put down to my
inexperience with PCB layout - I went through three iterations of the
interface PCB before buying standard mesa boards. In the end it turned out
that that PSU was incredibly spiky (it would create extra steps when plugged
into the same ring main 40 feet away, no other machine connection). When I
swapped it out for a underpowered spare linear I had the noise issues
vanished. I've since replaced it with a bog standard 48V 10A industrial
switchmode PSU from RS - which... just works - also mounts to a DIN rail
which was a bonus for me.

That said, for my current project (sinker EDM) I ended up getting a custom
wound 2 kVA 72 V transformer made up - it was cheaper than using three
'standard' transformers in series, and gives me a fairly decent bit of room
for surges in demand.

I strongly suspect that the next CNC I do will use a large linear power
supply, and feed all the drives off that as a DC link.

Hope that helps
Ben
