Take a look in /etc/apt/sources.list and /etc/apt/sources.list.d/*, look for a line specifying 'deb http://linuxcnc.org'. If it's not there, then that's the problem. Did you start with a Lucid install CD from Ubuntu or with the LinuxCNC Live CD?
