Just to point out that the little circuit I pointed out earlier
basically acts like a PWM-controlled potentiometer, so can control any
voltage up to the chip max and need not share a ground with the logic
side.
It can be especially useful for such as the KBIC speed controls where
the pot floats at +100V relative to machine ground. (The circuit will
still work as the optical link is good to 1000s of volts, and the
actual voltage across the pot terminals is only 10v).
