And either excessive compensation or not enough.

When I get this together enough that I can chuck up 1/2" rod, make a test 
cut to see how far off I am and then make what I think ia n intelligent 
adjustment to the X axis HOME_OFFSET, I think the 1st thing is to make my 
homing gauge a 3 point.  As it is, I can also use it to measure how much 
vactra is on the ways as it has about 3 square inches sitting on the level 
rear of the bed.  So I'll ball nose a set screw and use it for a single 
contact resting point to see if that reduces the repeat errors.  Too easy 
to get a contaminant under it the way it is, which tips it fwd.

This does bring up another question though:  Is there a formula to derive 
the ideals in The Machinists Handbook?
