Number of bytes divided by bytes per inch gives length of tape. Length of tape times thickness of tape gives the area of the tape as viewed from the side. (10 bytes per inch, and 0.1mm thick, from the Wikipedia article on paper tape.) The area viewed from the side is the same no matter what shape the tape is in.
