Talking about "so to speak", here in Oz it's "stir the possum".
(Possibly because you only have to look sideways at a marsupial possum
to get a very agro reaction - at least that's what I've found, when
trying to get one out of the chimney, with thick leather gloves and a
hessian bag.) Nevertheless, it usually refers to good natured incitement
or gleefully mischievous provocation.
