I know better than to insist that the market is wrong because it picked the wrong product. Obviously, there is a market for Mach and I wish them every success. However, I do think that part of Mach's success is tied to Windows success. People dance with the devil they know.
For my needs, LinuxCNC is superior. It's very stable and the true realtime kernel allows LinuxCNC to do rigid tapping, precise threading, etc. I believe many of the people who think Mach is easier because "Linux is complicated" have an outdated view of the world. For all of these little stepper based routers and other small systems (most of the installations), what could be easier than installing Linux (with lots of other goodies) and LinuxCNC from an ISO burned to a flash thumb drive, then running StepConf? I can't imagine Mach could possibly be any easier unless someone did it for you. I also like the looks of Axis running on LinuxCNC. Mach looks garish and clunky to me, but I certainly do admit that aesthetics are very subjective. Maybe some people find the Playschool bold primary color scheme to be reassuring and unintimidating?
