Well, even if imperial units are not always the same, the vast majority
of engineering uses the fixed conversion 1"==25.4mm.

I /could/ implement foot, mile, furlong, rod and chain too or, for that
matter, any variation on the theme. However, I do not see the point in
doing so.

The two lasting measurement units are (US) imperial and metric where
there has been an understanding for quite some time how they relate to
each other. The corner-cases, while disturbing, are but a mere curiosity
IMO.
