This is what I have ended up doing. (Though I haven't tried any actual
machining yet).

One small quirk is that I defined my own fonts as G-code subs inside
the routine.
The font is based on two octagons, I need to try actual engraving to
see if that ends up looking too angular, but it looks OK in the G-code
preview.

(Surprised that this thread is still getting replies 3 days after I
published my own code with a solution)
