My first idea was purchasing a powered hub. No luck either...

BUT I just found on the net that the hub should not feed the BBB with
power. The recommended solution is to cut the red wire on the cable (+5V),
but a plastic film on the power pin did the job too.
So it finally works!

Weird that a flash drive can only be mounted under root.
