I did not mention sound cards, thats a whole nother can of worms, and that 
situation seems about as foggy as ever.  True hardware cards like the 
Audigy2 Value are way too hard to find.  And software cards are probably 
going to effect the linuxcnc latency readings, sometimes a lot, so I 
wouldn't figure on listening to music on the same box that carves metal.  
Some of the carving might be a bit funkity.  So I don't have any speakers 
or amps plugged into the carving hardware, and if I happen to note that 
drivers are being loaded at bootup, I've been known to blacklist them in 
/etc/modules/blacklist.  But thats something the individual motherboard 
model may or may not need.
