Things to look for are speed range, some of the machines don't have higher speeds. I do a lot of work with 1/8" solid carbide end mills, and could definitely use higher speeds than I have available.
Also, check out the spindle taper. Make sure it isn't anything oddball, you could have trouble getting tooling for it. Check the ways and ballscrews for wear and damage. See if it looks easy to swap in newer (and higher resolution) encoders. Check the total height of the machine to make sure it will fit wherever you are planning to put it. This is a problem for me, we have low ceilings in the basement. If the motor is 480 only, you will need a step-up transformer and a 480 V VFD to run the spindle.
