Well, that result may be your answer.  SOME high-end 
machines have poor
latency.  In some cases, some tinkering with hyperthreading 
and LAPIC
options may improve it greatly.  But, some machines have 
just been poor,
with nobody having figured out how to improve it.  36 us may 
not be
horrible for a machine with hardware stepping or servo 
interfaces.
But, 36 us is not great for software stepping.
