This is the option file for dpkg-buildpackage
$ dpkg-buildpackage --help | grep compression
  -z<level>      compression level to use for source.
  -Z<compressor> compression to use for source (gz|xz|bzip2|lzma).

Default is gz. But xz is  high compression ratio, so source and binary
package is smaller.
