HAL can do it too. I wrote a GladeVCP application and HAL component that automatically tests a control board. The component invokes a sequence of commands and checks for a response. You press start and it goes through the tests. If the response LEDs are all green at the end, then the board passes. There is also a manual mode for trouble shooting. The board goes on a partial bed-o-nails to make changing boards a little easier.
(The attached screen shot is of the Glade layout, so looks a little funky)
