Well I've done it, and I don't mind saying for someone not that well versed in
linux I've succeeded in getting both the wireless internet working and getting
the game controller set up and controlling my mill.

The wireless issue came from the fact that I'm using an older PCI wireless
internet card from linksys and have WPA2 set as the security protocol. Found
.deb packages for the three packages I needed and installed them via dpkg

The game controller was super easy. I downloaded the .deb package for qjoypad
and also installed it via dpkg. After launching it was a quick and easy matter
to assign keystrokes to the different axis and buttons. I can now control my
little mill with the game controller.
Qjoypad can be obtained here https://packages.debian.org/unstable/main/qjoypad
if anyone else might be interested.
