Have a look at trunk lids on some cars. They use two transverse torsion 
rods to hold the lid open. On some models they are adjustable to two or 
three positions, especially on models with an optional rack or heavy 
wing or spoiler.

Not as prevalent now as in the 70's and 80's since gas cylinders (that 
can wear out) have become all the rage.

In the 60's and earlier, cars that had trunk lid springs usually used 
coiled flat springs. Cheaper models had a prop rod or a sliding catch 
rod which released with a second lift.
