The problem is that for multi-pass threading, you need one 
index pulse per rev.
If all the belts were set up for integral ratios, that would 
still work, it just might
take several turns to find the index.  But, you'd need to 
code the spindle
count to compensate for this, or your threads would come out 
off by
that belt ratio.
