So I need a high amp driver for the big motor. Sounds expensive.
It's going to be driving an old (1997) Star linear actuator mounted to
the side of the bed on a 9x20.

Large, heavy aluminum extrusion with a rather fast pitch ballscrew
inside. Will likely require more than 2:1 reduction. May enhance the
rigidity of the lathe if I use enough brackets and bolts. ;) Feels like
it weighs as much as the bed.

I got the two motors, the actuator and a 3/8" diameter ballscrew (to be
cut down for the cross slide and fitted similar to an ORAC), mounted
running an XY table on a very heavy wooden, rather high table that was
custom built for that abandoned project. Only cost $300. The table (with
it's near 3" thick top) will be a very sturdy home for my proLIGHT mill.
The builder is a woodworker getting into laser engraving. Nice table but
he didn't really know what he was going about building the CNC part.
Showed me a smaller one he'd built with extrusion and belts.

I took it apart yesterday and discovered exactly how sharp a cut edge on
stainless steel expanded metal* can be. Got a pair of nice gashes on the
underside of the middle two fingers of my left hand. Bled a bunch, got
wrapped up good. Really doesn't hurt much.

That was atop the table, spaced up from the base about an inch. Had to
remove it to get at the bolts holding it to the actuator's slide block.
The sharp edges were covered by wood corner molding. A little slip
handing it off and... I'm going to have to take a grinder to it just to
be able to dispose of the the piece safely. Don't think I have a use for
a piece of metal like that.
