As an aside (and then I will stop because this thread is so far
off-topic that I can't even see the topic): Fuel economy is measured
in units of area (volume/distance).

If you convert miles per gallon to an area you come up with something
about as thick as a hair. Now imagine a hair of fuel feeding into your
engine as you drive along.
Then look at all the other cars. And think how many roads there are.
Suddenly that's a collossal amount of fuel, easily visualised.
