I had no idea that it wasn't mentioned in man hal_parport. It is mentioned in http://linuxcnc.org/docs/html/hal/parallel_port.html but isn't covered very thoroughly. For those who don't know x-mode is a third option for configuring the parallel port driver in LinuxCNC (in, out, x). It allows the use of the 4 control pins 1, 14, 16 and 17 as inputs instead of outputs (but only on ports where those pins are open collectors). When using x-mode you get 8 outputs on pins 2-9, and 9 inputs on 1 and 10-17.
