I had toyed w/ replacing my glass scales and found the following on Ebay:

Here's a renishaw copy (new) of a linear magnetic read head:

The same guy was selling these:  http://www.ebay.com/itm/231135218237  But,
looks like he's all out of them.

magnetic tape (from same vendor):
http://www.ebay.com/itm/331023801182

The magnetic encoders will be way more durable than glass scales and
probably cheaper (although don't hold me to that).
