I think raspberry is best used for machine with builtin small touch screen or NML over tcp there real time is handled by raspberry and user interface by ordinary computer or other device. Raspberry is indeed a very cheap computer with good performance but I always came to the conclusion a used ordinary computer with a large screen is better.
