No threads on this one at all, its just a tapered sleeve, pressed or
drawn into its seat in the spindle by the 5C or in my case, the 5C->er40
adapter. So as I described to Cecil in a PM last night, I will remove
enough of the rear of this sleeve to give me adequate access to the
threads on the er40 adapter's tail. I'd like to have at least 8 threads
engaged, but with the length of this MT->5C adapter I only have about
2.5 engaged when the drawtube runs into the rear of this adapter sleeve.
since I have to add a nose piece to the drawtube spacer to both bear on
the endplay adjuster nut instead of the bearing, and to center the
drawtube, and order up some 3/8" ID ball bearing thrust washers for
other parts of this conversion, I'll order one big enough to serve as a
draw-tube<->wheel hub bearing too. Might as well go first class, the
ticket doesn't cost that much more. :) Needs a swarf shielding cup
around it of course.

3 other places for 6 total in my other cnc conversions I have used a ball
bearing thrust washer with quite good results by putting an adjuster
lock nut on the shaft so a bit of pre-load tension can be set. Buried in
a pocket about .001" shallower than the bearing is thick, they can turn
quite freely, and that .001 gap clearance does a good job of keeping
swarf out. The rest of the bearing is still the close fit of the shaft
in the bearing hub. With zero endplay there, the backlash is in the
ball fit and well under 1.5 thou after hundreds of hours use in the
little monster. The toy mill, not so lucky as I tried to make felt
swarf wipers, which I have had to dis and re-adjust the pressure on the
felt as it has collapsed, giving the trapped nut some room to move. I'd
make a wrench to slip over the screw, but theres a limit switch in the
way to keep LCNC from unscrewing itself out of the nut.

Sigh, perfection is seems, is always just around the corner. So I've had
to apply a saying an ex-b.i.l. was fond of using: "Its good enough for
the girls I go with". :)
