DOn't toss it. here is lot of use for a computer with no or broken video.. Like controlling a machine or something or serving up media files.
Back to the poor X11 performance. I bet a video driver problem or just maybe X11 does not run well on a real-time modified Linux kernel. X11 works well enough but not outstandingly fast, but well enough on my Pi3 but I have Ubuntu Linux on mine and a non-RT kernel.
