The forum's console showed "hung task" messages about apache2. I rebooted it. Unfortunately the messages were not in kernel.log after reboot, so I don't know what else went wrong.
This occurrence is unusual. I upgraded the kernel on January 11, so hopefully this is not a new bug in the new kernel. (the system runs ubuntu 14.04 with ubuntu's kernel) Hopefully it doesn't happen again, but if it does the first suspicion would fall on the updated kernel.
