OK, I got linuxcnc-dev installed on 2.5 and the hal comps compiled.

All I needed to do was add the apt source  "deb http://linuxcnc.org/ lucid
base linuxcnc2.5"

For some reason the preexisting apt lines were for emc2.4, even though I
installed the 2.5 image. Odd...

Thanks all, I am leaning very slowly but surely!

Off to try the comps in PP now.
