Ah, no NVRAM on the Pi, then. That OTP option is like marriage in the
days before divorce.

Maybe copy the u-sd boot sector to a backup file, then overwrite with a
copy of the new HD's boot sector, once formatted bootable, so that it
goes there instead? That is quickly reversible, I figure. (If there are
issues, then it's good to have a second bootable u-sd card on hand.)

The HD boot may well be two-stage, but the HD primary boot will know
about the secondary boot, so it should all just fly. (In theory. :-)
