I have brass contact fingers and they work well. When supporting the barrel tennon, they ride on the threads without damaging them. Otherwise, they will always leave an annoying ring on a barrel. Only way to circumvent is to make a collar to slip over barrel, then skim cut concentric with the bore. Other option is to make a set of inboard and outboard cat-heads so you can work near the head stock. This really depends on the spindle bore dia and barrel dimensions you are working with.
