Metric bolts and nuts only use a few different thread sizes. This is really a good thing and make using metric nuts and bolt easy. But if you look around there are many metric threads that are not in nuts and bolts just the common ones I've run into are the thin ring nuts used to secure a toggle switch to a panel and some adjustments in cars and other machines where the threads need to be finer than normal. And then in eletronics there are many special purpose threads mainly because the female part is in some thin material
I just had to buy a 12x1.25 tap set, one taper and one plug type. I had to cut threads for a proximity sensor.
