That's what I've read about telco backup batteries. They aren't built for rapid
or deep discharge. They're made to sit there for a long time, being float
charged, just waiting for very rare power outages. Thus they are a poor choice
for storage for an off grid power system fed by solar, wind, or hydro.
If you have a natural gas well on your property, it might be better to install
a micro turbine. I first read about those in Plastics News where a molding
company had installed a big wind turbine then wanted to just keep the main
electric connection for backup during the rare times the wind died down. The
electric utility wasn't having it. They were going to charge the company just
as much for having the hookup and not using any power as they'd been charged
for the power they had been using before installing the turbine.
So the plastics company called up the gas company for a hookup and bought
several microturbine generators. Then they cut ties completely with the
electric company. The gas company was happy to sell them gas, or not, depending
on whatever the factory needed to make up for whatever/whenever the wind
turbine wasn't producing enough.

Have you run the numbers? What do they cost per KWH over 10 years? The
cost of each battery is meaningless.
The "price to beat" right now is about $500 (the cost to buy and maintain
over 10 years in dollars/KWH)
THose Telco batteries do last a LONG time because the telcos NEVER
discharge them but at 50% discharge they get about 500 cycles which is
REALLY good compared to most LA batteries. But in this use case --
storing solar power they will see one cycle per day and a 500 cycle
battery will not last two years. So you look at the chart and see that
if you discharge only to 10% or 5% thy can last thousands of cycles. No
kidding that is the intended use case on the telco industry. But at 10%
discharge limit you need five times more batteries so the initial cost is
to high.
