Ah, thanks.  I do have it backwards.  I thought it was M3 is clockwise looking 
towards spindle.  That would be looking from larger Z to smaller Z in my case.  
Apparently I need to fix that at some point and then change all our programs :-(

The motor is a 3-phase Black Max 3HP inverter duty AC induction motor (Marathon 
Electric brand bought through Automation Direct) driven by an Automation Direct 
VFD (GS2).
