Thank you for actually reminding me that googling the symptoms can provide some hints for solution. I started yesterday and today spent all day from 9 to 17, and somehow I got those 2 computers installed. And I had never previously encountered those kinds of issues - at first the installer got stuck at the cdrom (and BTW that unplug/replug usb drive did not work for me), then it could not install grub, then the user was not allowed to run sudo commands, synaptic did not run and then there was some other crap that I do not remember. Anyways, that task is completed, case closed! (Spoiler alert! There will be more, as I am writing another email with lots of questions about one of those machines I have to set up).
