The Mac has an Ethernet port, does it not? You say it is an older Mac, so it likely does have one. Some of the newer Macs lack the port, and you have to buy a USB-C to Ethernet dongle.
If it has the built-in RJ45 jack simply connect it. If not buy the Dongle on Amazon. At some point, you will want to install Linux on the Mac. Running from the USB drive is very slow. It is odd to say the Mac acts like a Raspberry Pi.
