I'm not carving engine blocks, thank $deity.  Most of what I design is pretty easy for a 3d printer. If I need locators on top and bottom, I'll cut it into 2 parts so I can turn one over when its been separated.  I did that with the locator/shims for my B axis locking the B axis alignment to the bed,
such as it is on my 6040 mill. BBLB stuff.
