Andy,

Evidently because I had installed linuxcnc2.9 from Debian, it wouldn’t allow it 
to be replaced with “an earlier version” linuxcnc2.9.0-pre1. I had to remove 
linuxcnc2.9-uspace and linuxcnc2.9-uspace-dev, before it would allow me to 
install the newer built from scratch.
