That leaves the backlash in the gearshift, which are nylon gears in a

That shouldn't matter if the encoder is on the spindle.
it is not on the spindle, it on the rear of the motor, with the nylon
gears between it and the spindle. So there's at least a 15 count diff in
the gear backlash. Maybe, I just went out, put the head in low gear,
and turned the spindle by hand both ways to take up the lash, and it
surprised me, I'd guess the lash is not more than 3 degrees before it
turns the motor. That isn't much so my guess is that there is some
other cause.
It detects the encoder reversing to know when to reverse the Z direction.
If it cuts on both directions, then perhaps there is a lag introduced
by something in your HAL. Or maybe there is slack in the Z drive.
Next is a new 2nd heater, the garage is cool cuz one has died. I use two
set for low or about 700 watts, Fan dead in oldest one. Cheap $25
heaters. Probably cold enough to make the iso68 in the head sled draggy
on the post. Thanks Andy.
Cheers, Gene Heskett, CET.
