What are you using to convert the output of the LVDT to frequency?

I was hoping to use something like this to drive the LVDT:

https://www.analog.com/media/en/technical-documentation/data-sheets/ad598.pdf

And then convert the voltage output from the AD598 to frequency using a 555
timer. I don't have all of this figured out yet, that's why I'm still
defining which boards to use. But for some reason I feel more
comfortable using the encoder inputs as counters.

Also, the encoder reading on mesa cards is super fast and reliable so I'm

That seems like a reasonable choice.

And then convert the voltage output from the AD598 to frequency using a 555
timer.
I think that this part is not the best way, an analogue output voltage
would be best measured directly by an ADC, and is likely to offer
better repeatability than a 555 timer circuit.

The 7i87 is s smart-serial card, and three of them could connect to
the 7i74 you were considering.

What's the machine? LVDTs and RDVTs are interesting and precise, but
somewhat old-fashioned.
