What do you mean with "separate"? Separate from what?

USB disconnect when enabling power sounds like EMI problems. Maybe some
EM spikes couple into the USB cable and cause problems. Does dmesg show
anything? 

Try using different cable, cable with choke / ferrite bead, check for
potential difference between PC ground and stmbl logic ground, move
things around, check shield on servo motor cable, ...
