Using an encrypted swap partition is a much easier and safer way to
achieve this.  A decade ago that was not commonly available and thus the
mlock trick was introduced to mitigate the problem.

However, once someone gets physical access for only a short time, you
inevitable entered game over state.  Thus all such measures may work in
theory but won't stop any real world attacks.
