1. MACMAG GLIP REGIONAL CAMPAIGN ON WOMEN'S RIGHT NATIONALITY

The Machreq/Maghreb Gender Linking and Information Project (MACMAG GLIP)

'Gender & Citizenship' Campaign: Women's Right to Nationality

On the occasion of the International Women's Day (8 March) GLIP is
engaging in a regional campaign entitled 'Women's Right to Nationality'
in support of women who are struggling to gain their full and equal
rights as nationals of their country.

At present, women throughout the Machreq and Maghreb regions are being
denied their full national identities by being excluded from the rights,
privileges, and security that all citizens of a country should have
access to. Unjust laws, discriminatory constitutions, and bias
mentalities that do not recognize women as equal citizens, hinder
women's rights to such things as political participation, economic
security, mobility, and state protection.

Throughout Machreq/Maghreb, Arab women, should they choose to marry a
foreigner, are denied the right to extend their citizenship to their
husbands. Furthermore, only fathers, not mothers, can independently
pass citizenship to their children. There is no reason for men to be
automatically eligible to extend their nationality to their wives and
children while women are not. This inequality not only refuses women
their right as citizens, it also denies children their basic rights as
human beings. These discriminatory laws must be changed throughout the
Arab world! GLIP believes that gaining women's right to nationality is a
primary step in gaining other basic human rights deserving to Arab
women. The goal of GLIP' s campaign is two-fold: to raise awareness
about women's right to nationality, and to pressure governments to
examine and revise discriminatory laws concerning nationality and
citizenship. GLIP's activities will concentrate on three main areas:
participatory research, capacity building and training, and advocacy.
