Dear End-Violence Members,

Health & Development Networks (HDN), the United Nations Development Fund
for Women (UNIFEM) and the International AIDS Society's Women's Caucus
invite you to join a special e-mail discussion on the Gender-AIDS forum
focusing on gender and HIV/AIDS.

As the global rates of new HIV infection among women - particularly young
women - continue to rise disproportionately to infections among men, we
are reminded of the importance of looking specifically at issues that
affect women.

"In 2020, Botswana is expected to have more women in their 60s and 70s
than women in their 40s and 50s" due to HIV, according to UNAIDS.

Using the Gender-AIDS electronic forum, the nearly 2000 existing members
-and hopefully many new participants- will come together to discuss issues
related to women and HIV/AIDS that will be on the agenda at the XIVth
World AIDS Conference in Barcelona and, in particular, the pre-conference
satellite on 7 July, 2002 called "Women At Barcelona".

The on-line forum will also inform the discussion on women's issues at
conference activities and in the community forums. Information compiled
will also strengthen the declaration, which will be an important part of
the Women at Barcelona and beyond.

The key areas identified for discussion on the forum are: Research and
Treatment; Advocacy and Policy; and Care Economy.

This is an opportunity to take stock of what has happened since Durban in
terms of research, treatment, advocacy and policy as well as to open new
dialogue on the issues surrounding Care Economy - addressing the
disproportionate unpaid burden of care on women and girls for caring for
others in the home.

To launch the discussions, we will draw upon a team of key resource
people, and the HDN Key Correspondents, and we look to you and your
colleagues to deliberate actively in what should prove to be an exciting,
lively and informative online discussion.

Most importantly, we hope to have the active participation of those
individuals who, for whatever reason, will not attend Barcelona 2002 -
this will ensure a rich and relevant focus to the dialogue and that as
many voices as possible feed into the discussion and agenda for Women At
Barcelona.

If you would like to be part of this exciting process, send an e-mail
to:

Looking forward to your active participation in this forum and
contribution towards setting the agenda for "Women At Barcelona."
